Peru: August 12-19, 2023
8 Days, 7 Nights
In August of 2023, join Teach With Love™️ and a small group of educators and allies of education at our Peru International Education Program. Together, in this transformative experience, we will participate in, amplify, and uplift the diverse voices of the Peruvian people and the landscapes they inhabit. In this spirit of mutual respect and understanding, we will honor their indigenous wisdom, traditions, and the rich narratives they bestow upon us.
Peru is a colorful land known for textiles, ancient ruins, and incredible culture. We have been invited to experience authentic experiences in an indigenous Andes mountain community, rich in history and tradition, where we will learn firsthand about the traditional textile process. We will not be spectators, but learners as the indigenous Quechuan teachers will show us how they dye fabrics, their weaving process, and textile processes directly from the women and men who practice it, allowing the community to have control over their own narrative and traditions. During our visit, we will visit their homes to learn about and celebrate the traditional foods of Peru. We will have a barbeque—Quechuan style!
Under the umbrella of the L.O.V.E. framework, we celebrate and acknowledge their struggles, their successes, and their unique worldview. We engage, not as mere spectators, but as active learners, opening our hearts and minds to a new perspective of seeing, understanding, and appreciating the world.
In our shared journey of enlightenment, we will dedicate a day to honor the ancient Machu Picchu, a UNESCO world heritage site. This sacred Inca city, perched 2,430 m above sea level, amidst a tropical mountain forest, beckons us not as casual sightseers, but as humble learners, eager to resonate with its profound past. In the embrace of the mountainous sanctuary, we will find ourselves touched by the vastness of the incredible mountain vistas. The exploration of the Inca ruins will not be a mere tourist venture, but a respectful communion with the footprints of the past. We’ll find ourselves interconnected with the world around us, cradled in the heart of ancient wisdom. Our journey then leads us to the nearby Rainbow Mountain region, originally known as Vinicunca, nestled in the embrace of the Andes mountains. This natural canvas is renowned for its strikingly multi-colored beauty, a testament to Mother Earth's palette, with hues ranging from turquoise to lavender to gold. Yet, in reverence of these lands, we journey not as conquerors or mere visitors, but as respectful guests of nature, treading lightly upon the lesser traveled paths, to simply be present and appreciate the silent narrative of this incredible beauty.
Together, we engage in this exploration not as consumers of experiences but as active participants, fostering understanding and respect, honoring the voices and stories of the landscapes and cultures we are privileged to encounter.
Your leaders, Lorena Germán and Taína Benitez, are both fluent Spanish speaking advocates, speakers, and educators. A true lover of helping people, she has been an advocate for inclusivity, social justice, and bringing opportunities to underprivileged teachers and students, for over two decades.
Our entire approach for the program trip will incorporate Teach With Love's culturally informed principles, with guidance from our Thought Leaders. Our philosophy is centered around seeking knowledge through ongoing, hopeful inquiry with the world and each other, as proposed by Paulo Freire, the author of "Pedagogy of the Oppressed." Throughout the program trip, we aim to immerse ourselves in every experience, expand our cultural understanding, forge meaningful connections, and return home with a renewed commitment to using L.O.V.E. as the foundation for culturally informed teaching.
