PUERTO RICO 2024

The moment you land in Puerto Rico, the spirit of the island will consume you. From Taíno caves with petroglyphs, exploring buildings dating from the 16th century, including the San Felipe del Morro, San Cristóbal fortresses, and the old city walls…hearing the beautiful traditional Afro-Puertorican music of Bomba to the resilient voices of our people.
We’ll be staying in Old San Juan in a beautiful Spanish Colonial structure that’s a true landmark in Viejo San Juan, right up there with the 16th-century cathedral that faces it and the forts and battlements that first established the city. Dating back to the 17th century, building offers a real sense of hushed reverence, with towering, arched doorways, Andalusian tile floors, mahogany beamed ceilings, and conquistador-era furnishings and art.
Join leaders Taína Benitez and Almudena Bayou in Puerto Rico for an authentic cultural immersion experience! Learn about pre-colonial and colonial history and dive deep into what's not in our US history books. Taína, former classroom teacher and instructional coach, is a daughter of the indigenous Borinquén of Puerto Rico, the Taíno indians. Throughout the program trip, Taína will share pre-colonial history on Puerto Rico, through the eyes of her Boricuan ancestors. She will also share knowledge of the Taíno education and culture. Almudena, Spanish teacher and daughter of a math teacher, is a native Spaniard, born in Spain's capital city, Madrid. Almudena will share an authentic view of the colonization of Puerto Rico through the lessons and history she learned growing up in Spain.
Both Taína and Almudena are native Spanish speakers and have a wealth of information to share! You'll love traveling with them because they bring so much love and fun in everything they do!
The Teach With Love culturally informed principles will be woven into our entire approach for the program trip. Our vibe will be to “seek patience and passion” (Maya Angelou), and be present in each experience where you will expand your cultural knowledge, make amazing connections and develop beautiful relationships.
